Doyle Cowan

Doyle W. Cowan, 75, employed by the city of Abilene for 13 years until retiring, died Saturday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South. Graveside services will be at 4:30 p.m. in Cottonwood Cemetery.

Mr. Cowan was born in Childress and attended school in Memphis and Hillsboro. He served with the U.S. Naval Air Corps aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex during World War II and moved to Abilene in 1969 from Cross Plains. He was a member of Baker Heights Church of Christ and was the widower of Clara Mae Woody Cowan, whom he married in 1942 in Cross Plains.

Survivors include one son, Tommy Cowan of Austin; two daughters, Wanda Wheeler and Linda O'Dell, both of Abilene; two sisters, Lavatha Gentry of Fort Worth and Corrine Barnett of Snyder; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
